Migration Pathways

Choose Your Visa Pathway

Australia offers two main routes to skilled migration: independent points-tested visas under the General Skilled Migration program, and employer-sponsored visas tied to a job offer.

The GSM program is a points-tested system for skilled workers not sponsored by an employer. Applicants submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) through SkillSelect and are ranked by points score before receiving an invitation to apply.

189 Permanent

Skilled Independent Visa

Live and work anywhere in Australia permanently - without needing a sponsor, employer, or state territory nomination.

No employer or state sponsor required
Permanent residency from day one
Occupation must be on MLTSSL
Highly competitive - highest points needed
190 Permanent

Skilled Nominated Visa

Permanent visa requiring nomination from an Australian state or territory government. Nomination earns an extra 5 points.

State / territory nomination (+5 points)
Permanent residency upon grant
Obligation to live / work in nominating state
Broader occupation lists than 189
491 Provisional

Skilled Work Regional (Provisional)

5-year provisional visa to live and work in a regional area, with a pathway to permanent residency via Subclass 191.

Employer-sponsored visas require a formal job offer from an approved Australian employer. They generally bypass the SkillSelect EOI queue and offer a faster path when you have employer support.
